Black Friday 2010 Scorecard: Online Shopping Stats, Top Brand Tweets

The stats for Black Friday 2010 are just now rolling in, and we have collected data from several sources to see how consumers shopped online and which brands received the most (and the least) attention on Twitter during Black Friday.

PayPal tracked the consumer spending habits of shoppers from Thanksgiving through Black Friday and found that online payments made with PayPal increased 27% over Black Friday 2009. Additionally, more people were shopping while the turkey was roasting, as payments made on Thanksgiving day itself increased 25% compared to 2009.

The biggest shopping times on Black Friday, as determined by PayPal, were between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. PST. But that wasn't the start of the holiday shopping season, which PayPal puts at November 15, when we started to see many of the early Black Friday deals.

In addition to the online spending, FortiusOne monitored Black Friday tweets by brand and location, offering a picture of which brands were the biggest winners and losers of Black Friday 2010.

Best Cyber Monday Deals 2010: Moving To Cyber Week

Almost everyone in the U.S is familiar with Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year after Thanksgiving is over and done with.
There is no doubt that the day after this holiday, the doors to many stores across the country open and there are some great sales, but there is another shopping day not everyone is aware of. Cyber Monday is another big shopping day that people enjoy and it is definitely becoming a traditional that didn’t exist 10 years ago. Online shopping websites like Amazon allow people to go on and look for all of the great deals that are being offered with everything from electronics to clothes.
Cyber Monday is pretty much the equivalent of Black Friday but takes place online, and there are certainly many people who participate in this tradition. Statistically, one out of every six Americans tends to go online on Cyber Monday.
Although maybe the tradition is not as popular as the day after Thanksgiving, it is still growing and many people like the fact that they do not have to wait in line on this shopping day. There are certainly a lot of great sales on a variety of items which have been slashed n price.
Many online outlets are extending the Cyber Monday deals: Toys R Us and Walmart, for example are now pushing Cyber Week 2010.

Apple Black Friday 2010 Deals

Apple has been toying with our emotions the past week. They haven’t released their Black Friday ads because they don’t have any. Apple is traditionally low key on Black Friday, but they did tease us with some Black Friday 2010 banter on their website.
The only information Apple has released officially is on their website and that is, “a special one-day shopping event on the day after Thanksgiving” with “dozens of great iPad, iPod, and Mac gifts” for all.
Apple retail stores will be opening at 8 a.m. Friday morning and the same sales will also be found on their online stores.
Don’t get too excited for major discounts though, Apple’s past Black Friday discounts have been modest. However, you can expect free shipping when you spend at least $50 online.

Toys R Us Black Friday 2010 Ads

Black Friday is just a mere few hours away, but Toys R Us has already kicked off their Black Friday event.
Toys R Us opened up early–very early. The store opened at 10 p.m. on Thursday, but the Black Friday deals will end at 1 p.m. on Black Friday.
And as things are getting down to the wire, stores are throwing more and more Black Friday and holiday deals up last minute.
Toys R Us, after releasing it’s Black Friday 2010 ads early a few weeks ago, is now bringing the deals to their website.
Maybe they think people are getting scared of the potential crowds with all the Black Friday hoopla? We sure are!

Walmart Black Friday 2010 Deals and Ads: HDTV and GPS Deals

Complete List of 2010 Black Friday Laptops

Josh Smith has put together a comprehensive list of Black Friday laptops over at Notebooks.com. There are a lot of mediocre laptops on the list, but some of the prices are pretty unbelievable if you’re in the market for an affordable laptop. Just about every manufacturer and retailer is getting in on the Black Friday game. Some are selling machines that don’t have a lot of guts, while others are offering pretty impressive discounts on build-to-order machines so you can get exactly what you want. There are some gems scattered in there, but as always there’s limited quantities.
The good news about Black Friday is that it’s become much less of a brick and mortar phenomenon and much more of an online ordeal. Apparently, retailers have recognized that not everybody enjoys camping out in freezing parking lots to save some cash.
I’ve already blown my Black Friday budget on a new HDTV and MacBook Air. If I end up getting thing else it’s going to be purchased online in between bites of turkey sandwich.

Switched Black Friday 2010 Guide

As with the holiday season in general, the post-Thanksgiving shopping panic just keeps getting longer. What started out as a one-day discount bonanza known as Black Friday has now spawned an online-only counterpart in Cyber Monday. This year, though, retailers are offering steep discounts early and often. Many outlets are now adding Thanksgiving Day to the holiday shopping schedule, and some have extended deals for the entire week (Amazon) or the entire month (Newegg).

Black Friday 2010 Best Deals and Shopping Tips

The problem that we might be facing is actually trying to compare the various deals that will be available online. There are major deals being offered by Walmart, K-Mart, Sears, Target, Best Buy, Amazon and many more but which among them has the best deal?
Another question to ask when trying to decide on what item to buy for Black Friday 2010 is if we really need that item. Is this item necessary? Will this item be within the budget that I or my family has? During Black Friday each year most people have the tendency of compulsive buying where in they will just buy anything as long as they see a big discount on it. Later on they will realize that the item they have purchased is not a necessity and they could have used the money for other purposes.
So, for everyone in town who wants to know on the whats and hows o Black Friday 2010, here is a video which talks about the many facets of the annual Black Friday sale. Hope you learn something from this.

Black Friday lures include price cuts, Sing-A-Ma-Jigs

FROM TRADITIONAL lures like slashed prices on hot electronics to a "Santa-Sing-A-Ma-Jig" toy, U.S. retailers are pushing to attract shoppers into their doors on Black Friday.

With higher income, consumers are more positive about their financial prospects but with lower income consumers are still struggling, retailers are reaching out with smartphone and iPad apps, extending store hours for the holiday season kick-off that starts November 26 this year.

Sears and Wal-Mart Stores Inc are even open on U.S. Thanksgiving Day that Thursday.

The key is to not only attract consumer shopping for "doorbuster" deals that start well before dawn, but to nab the attention of middle and higher-income shoppers who are feeling more comfortable about spending as the job market stabilises.
"It's critical to get off on a good start for Black Friday because it's hard to make up sales if you fall behind your plan overall," Barclays Capital analyst Bob Drbul said.

Black Friday is a term co-opted by retailers to refer to the time of year when their business moves into the black, or turns a profit. This year, the event will be about keeping sales momentum that picked up modestly throughout the year.

"For the past three years, (store) trips have been declining. What we have been starting to see the last couple of months is that middle and upper consumers have started increasing those trips," said James Russo, vice president at market and consumer information monitor The Nielsen Co.

Retail stocks in general are up sharply since August, buoyed by signs of sales and earnings improvement. The Standard & Poor's Retailing Index is up 23 percent, compared with a 13.9 percent increase in the S&P 500.

As many as 138 million shoppers could hit U.S. stores this "Black Friday" weekend, according to the National Retail Federation.
The trade group has forecast a 2.3 percent increase in sales for November and December, up from 0.4 percent a year earlier. Other forecasts call for even greater increases.

EARLY ENOUGH?

Discounter Target Corp is among those that got a jump on Black Friday, with a four-day sale that began on Sunday and that included more items than last year, said Troy Risch, executive vice president of stores for the retailer.

That tactic of early sales has appealed to some shoppers.
"What I really like is that a lot of stores are opening before Black Friday," said Gabriella Jones, a 49-year-old from Lake Forest, California, who was in Times Square traveling with her daughter on Wednesday. "It's almost like Black Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday."

Target stores will also be open at 4 am on Black Friday.
But that means that Target is sleeping as compared with Toys R Us, the world's largest dedicated toy retailer, which opens at 10 pm On Thanksgiving for 24 hours straight.

Toys R Us is hoping to bring in customers with exclusive items like the Santa Sing-A-Ma-Jig, a line of singing dolls dressed in Santa costumes.

This year Black Friday caters to people, who are still struggling with unemployment, falling home prices and economic insecurity.
Wal-Mart, for example, is offering items like a 32-inch Emerson LCD HDTVfor $198. The discounter, which is looking to break a string of six quarters of falling sales at storesis also offering to match competitors' price on Friday.

"There's a lot of people, who are still feeling the pinch and that is going to make Black Friday an even bigger deal than it is historically," said Patty Edwards, chief investment officer at Trutina Financial. She noted those consumers will be drawn out by early "doorbuster" deals.

But, stores that cater to higher end consumers are finding the most favor with retail analysts.

Leather goods maker Coach Inc, high-end jeweler Tiffany & Co and clothing retailer J Crew were among Edwards' top investment picks.

Consumers have also shown a propensity to shop for Black Friday deals and then to hold off on other purchases until the last weekend before Christmas.

"I think we will see a pretty big lull post-Black Friday and then we will see a pretty big promotional calendar," Janney Capital Markets analyst David Strasser said. "The consumer has kind of caught on that there is no reason to shop the week or two after Black Friday."

But waiting out that lull will not cut it for retailers that cater to middle-market consumers, Edwards said.

"If they don't have it well planned, with something to surprise and delight ... their customers each week, they are going to have issues," she said.
